Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats
By Thomas Stearns Eliot (1886-1965)
(See Poem Collection for full
version)
The
Rum Tum Tugger
The Rum
Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat:
If you
offer him pheasant he would rather have grouse.
If you
put him in a house he would much prefer a flat,
If you
put him in a flat then he'd rather have a house.
If you
set him on a mouse then he only wants a rat,
If you
set him on a rat then he'd rather chase a mouse.
Yes the
Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat--
And
there isn't any call for me to shout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there's no doing anything about it!
The Rum
Tum Tugger is a terrible bore:
When you
let him in, then he wants to be out;
He's
always on the wrong side of every door,
And as
soon as he's at home, then he'd like to get about.
He likes
to lie in the bureau drawer,
But he
makes such a fuss if he can't get out.
Yes the
Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat--
And
there isn't any use for you to doubt it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there's no doing anything about it!
The Rum
Tum Tugger is a curious beast:
His
disobliging ways are a matter of habit.
If you
offer him fish then he always wants a feast;
When
there isn't any fish then he won't eat rabbit.
If you
offer him cream then he sniffs and sneers,
For he
only likes what he finds for himself;
So
you'll catch him in it right up to the ears,
If you
put it away on the larder shelf.
The Rum
Tum Tugger is artful and knowing,
The Rum
Tum Tugger doesn't care for a cuddle;
But
he'll leap on your lap in the middle of your sewing,
For
there's nothing he enjoys like a horrible muddle.
Yes the
Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat--
And
there isn't any need for me to spout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there's no doing anything about it!

Laws for Cats
Law of Obedience Resistance
A cat's resistance varies in proportion to a human's desire for her to do
something.
First Law of Energy Conservation
Cats know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed and will,
therefore, use as little energy as possible.
Second Law of Energy Conservation
Cats also know that energy can only be stored by a lot of napping.
Law of Refrigerator Observation
If a cat watches a refrigerator long enough, someone will come along and
take out something good to eat.
Law of Electric Blanket Attraction
Turn on an electric blanket and a cat will jump into bed at the speed of
light.
Law of Random Comfort Seeking
A cat will always seek, and usually take over, the most comfortable spot in
any given room.
Law of Box Occupancy
All bags and boxes in a given room must contain a cat within the earliest
possible nanosecond.
Law of Cat Embarrassment
A cat's irritation rises in direct proportion to her embarrassment times the
amount of human laughter.
Law of Milk Consumption
A cat will drink his weight in milk, squared, just to show you he can.
Law of Furniture Replacement
A cat's desire to scratch furniture is directly proportional to the cost of
the furniture.
Law of Cat Landing
A cat will always land in the softest place possible.

Facts
93%
of cat owners admit they talk to their cats.
A cat can be either right-pawed or left-pawed.
A cat can jump as much as seven times its height.
A cat can spend five or more hours a day grooming himself.
A cat can sprint at about thirty-one miles per hour.
A cat cannot see directly under its nose. This is why the cat cannot seem to
find tidbits on the floor.
A cat has 230 bones in its body. A human only has 206 bones.
A cat's ear pivots 180 degrees.
A cat's field of vision is around 185 degrees.
A cat's gestation is between 61 and 65 days.
A cat's hearing is much more sensitive than that of humans and dogs.
A cat's hearing rates as one of the top in the animal kingdom. Cats can hear
sounds as high-pitched as 65 kHz; a human's hearing stops at just 20 kHz.
A cat's heart beats at 110 to 140 beats per minute, twice as fast as a human
heart.
A cat's jaw has only up and down motion; it does not have any lateral, side
to side motion, like dogs and humans. For this reason, don't rely on
feeding dry food as a dental care program - cats need to have their teeth
cleaned by a vet.
